How it works

Praana does not measure anything itself. It reads what your phone and your watch already record, keeps it in one place, and turns it into something you can act on. That shapes what the first day looks like.

Day one

About five minutes, most of it permissions

  • Install, and answer a short set of questions: date of birth, height and weight, and what you are trying to do. The date of birth is a real gate, not a formality: several features are restricted to over-17s.
  • Grant health access. iPhone shows Apple's permission sheet; Android shows Health Connect's. You can grant some and refuse others, and Praana will say which screens that empties rather than nagging.
  • Everything you grant is read on the device. Nothing about your health is uploaded to be processed.
  • Screens you have not granted access to explain what is missing and why, instead of showing a zero.

Day one

What already works, with nothing connected

If you have no wearable at all, most of the app still does its job. These do not need one:

  • Food logging, including barcode scanning and an AI camera scan for anything without a label.
  • Meal plans, which are generated from your goals rather than measured from your body.
  • Workouts: building them, logging sets by voice, rest timers, plate maths and personal records.
  • Blood Report, which reads a lab PDF you upload.
  • OvaFlow, the cycle tracker, which learns from what you log.
  • Journal, medication reminders, hydration, and the health news feed.
  • Steps, which your phone counts on its own.

Needs a wearable

Two numbers, and what they need

Sleep score
Any device that writes sleep to Apple Health or Health Connect. Devices that report only total sleep, without REM and deep stages, still get a score, but a capped one, and the app says so.
Stress score
Heart rate variability specifically. This is the one that catches people out: some bands and bridges sync heart rate but not HRV, and without HRV there is no stress score to show.

The first fortnight

Why the stress score makes you wait

A heart rate variability reading of 40ms is unremarkable for one person and a warning sign for another. Scoring it against a population average would produce a confident-looking number that describes strangers rather than you, and that would not change in any way you could act on.

So Praana measures against your own history instead. That is the version worth reading before deciding whether to train hard, and it costs about two weeks of wearing the watch through the day, not only overnight, before the baseline settles.

Until then the app says the baseline is still forming. It does not invent a number and quietly improve it.

After that

When the connections start paying off

  • Upload a blood report and your meal plan starts targeting what you are short of, rather than leaving the result as a number you meant to look up later.
  • Log a cycle and your training load and nutrition targets move with the phase.
  • Last night's sleep gets read against this month's stress trend, because high stress on good sleep means something different from high stress on bad sleep.
  • Ara can answer from all of it at once, which is the question no single-purpose app can take.

Honest

Who should not bother

If you want a number on the first morning, this is the wrong app and a recovery-focused one will suit you better. If you only care about one of these areas, a specialist app goes deeper than Praana does in any single one.

Praana is the trade in the other direction: a little less depth in each area in exchange for the connections between them.
